Question 4

In a peer discussion group, you were asked to discuss your paper before you started writing it. One of the members of your group gave you an interesting idea. Do you need to cite the idea in your paper just as you would cite a quotation from a paper? I think this is a normal problem in our life and we should think about group member idea because we should share our idea in same group.

I think we cannot cite their ideas although it is interesting. But we can use the same opinion with different way to solve same problem. When I use same group classmate opinion I will check it at first so that it is not a cheating behavior. The reason we do not know definition what is cheating behavior we should take care.

Question 8.

It is a cheating behavior when student post the internet article? It is serious cheating behavior. This behavior is often happen when we was a freshman, because we do not know the plagiarism definition. We just want to let our assignment be better. So we copy the internet, classmate and encyclopedias’ idea and good sentence.

We can easily found the plagiarism behavior form this question and we should refuse cheating behavior. When we enter the university we should have our own idea and let our classmate and professor know we have able to make our assignment be better.

Blog 5:Plagiarism Tutorial

The first question I choose is that whether I need to cite if one of the members of my group gave me an interesting idea. The answer tells me that in general ideas are not considered intellectual property, but some people may think it to be plagiarism. So it should be safe to cite it as “personal communication”. The second question is that whether it is plagiarism when my professor has taken something from my own work. The answer shows that everything belonging to me, even a paper written for class is equal to published papers.

From these questions, I learned that we should be careful about plagiarism and copyright. Everything concerning other’s work, even ideas should be respected. It is safe to cite all the sources we use in my paper work and contact necessary people regarding their copyright. At the same time, we should be sensitive for our own right. If something violates our copyright happens, even from our professors, we should use proper methods to defend our right. I think as an undergraduate in engineering department, this situation could happen since we often need to write papers as assignments. We should make sure we use others’ sources properly and aren’t violated by others. Even after graduation, we may face similar situation and it is important to solve these problems in an appropriate way. However, I still have a question that how to defend my right properly and legally when confronting with my professor, since it is a dilemma for most students.

Question 2 reflects the question about whether we cite the common knowledge. It is interested to discuss whether we are suppose to cite and how to cite common knowledge. The argue point is that the knowledge is common sense so that we believe it belong our own property. In other word, we needn't refer recourses but based on the Common knowledge we have already known. As a result, we think that we are writing based on their knowledge. However, Common knowledge is nothing special comparing with any kinds of knowledge. Although some knowledge seem to be born with us, it still observe, study, and conclude by other authors or scientists. For example, all the universe know that the Earth rotates around the Sun. It prove by scientists though several generations, from Copernicus to Galileo (Chapters 2.4 and 2.5, Astronomy Today). To respect for those great scientists' work, we definitely cite the recourse because without their work this Common knowledge even may not exist in the world. Moreover, we truly refer to the information in the textbook, so we should cite resources instead of cite the useful part.

Question 7 test our judgment of plagiarism. It is interested to switch the positon to judge other's work. The passages show a result of a research which human mom and animal mom are both great based on the cocaine research. All 3 sentences firstly both work okay for me. However, comparing those sentences the mistakes are obvious. First sentences copy too much information of the passage. Second sentences show same ideas with the passage. Only last sentences understand the key point of passage and compose new ideas. This question highlight several situation of plagiarism. Though our own judgment, we emphasize the skill to avoid plagiarism by practice. The crucial ideas we should know is that we should draw our own conclusion, which different from simply change few words.

Question 2:

If students need to write a research paper about an aspect that they do not know much about except some common sense from the textbook, how could they properly cite the knowledge? This is a typical situation because students are going to learn something they do not know. In the way, the study may often reach the area that students have never been taught. This is the high time to learn something new. According to the answer, the safest way to avoid plagiarism is to acknowledge the source where you get the information.

                From this question, I learned that citing is a necessary part of a paper. Students are learning something that already found by the previous talents in the past. So the existed knowledge is mostly published by certain material. Common knowledge is obviously a part of the knowledge and probably is written in the books. That is why students need to cite this information with acknowledging.

Question 8:

                If students copy the words from the internet, is it a kind of plagiarism? This situation is also very common in students’ academic lives because the information on the internet is too easy to access. Additionally, students consider the data on the website to be official and accurate.

                From the answer, I learned that the information on the internet is also a kind of intellectual property. When students copy the words from the web, it is also considered to be “stealing” others ideas. Even though it is a good way of learning and reading the material from the internet, students should not rely on it and should have independent thoughts. Most importantly, a reference is always necessary after a quotation in the paper.

     In the 19th century most European countries fled from their land to colonized African people and get raw materials from these lands.Italy was one of the European countries that came to Ethiopia.In 1889 Menelik 2nd came to the thorne,and when he was a king the Italian government thought that he would surrender the sovereignty of them with rifles.On May 2,1889 between Menelik and Italy government signed an agreement with Menelik that he would give Adwa,Mekele,and Adigrat to Italy.Italy in return would give rifles and some other weapons,but Italy made some trick to Menelik.When they signed the agreement  was written in two languages,Amharic and Italy versions.
      The Italian version said "The emporer concents to use the Italian government for all the business he does with all the other powers or government".
      The Amharic version said "The emperor has the option to communicate with the help of the Italian government for all matters that he wants with the kings of Europe.(Reference:Haile Girma Book).
     Menelik 2nd knew that they cheated him,he rejected the treaty and refused all further of gifts from the Italians.The Italian government angered by Menelik position and ordered their troops to Ethiopia fight with Menelik.One the Italian leader, General Barateeri boasted  and said "I am going to bring Menelik  back to Rome in a cage".He dreamed and ordered 25,000 moderate  trained,and armed troops.On the other sides, Menelik assembled 196,000men(They didn't get have  military training;just civilians)
      Both troops for 45 days without battle they stayed in respective places.while they were waiting for battle almost half of their supplies were gone.
      On march 1896 the war started in full force.In the battle that followed a wave of Ethiopian Soldiers and attacked the Italians.In fighting the Italians troops lost their position.This causing forced them to flee on total confusion .In the end Ethiopians won the battle.At the end of the battle 289 Italians ,2918Eurpopeans and about 2,000 Eritreans fighting for the Italians were lost lives.

      Battle of Adwa was not only Ethiopians,it was also a victory for all Africans.Battle of Adwa became symbol of pride for Africans all of the world.

A strange trip

If you go to 296 miles NE from Columbus, Ohio, you are going to get a beautiful place. This place is known as Niagara Falls. Niagara fall is located a border of America and Canada. It is huge movable water, and the water makes a big waterfall. It is not stagnant water like lakes, sea; oceans.It is look like a river. When the water comes from the top fall down to the bottom, it makes a white pleasant fume. After I introduce this place, let me tell you what went on at that time.

        It was summer time. I packed and loaded our luggages at the top my car. My family and my family members started our trip from Columbus, Ohio around 12:00 pm .I took 71N and drove the exact speed limit towards Canada. After 5:00 hours drive we took a rest at a park and ate our packed traditional food .the name the food is’ enjera bedoro watt’ (enjera means a flat bread and doro wat means chicken stew.) 15 minutes later we started our journey. After driving 5 hours, I saw beautiful green forests and grape farms beside the road.

      Now the time is 8:45 pm and the GPS said 10miles left reach to Canada. After 7 minute drive I saw a lot of cars stopped and the cars moved slowly turn by turn. It was American’s and Canadian’s boarder check point.

After waiting for several minutes, an old women officer said loudly I.D.please.I gave her 8 I.D.s...She stared at me and said how many people are there inside the car?’

I say 8 mom.2 men, 2 women 1 girl, 1 boy and 2 infants.

She said ‘open the window ‘

I did open.  Then she shouted at me and she said ‘my goodness!’Two infant and two kids without car seats and 8 people in a small car? Pull over your car and park at spot # 11

 I parked and waited for her .Ten minutes later she came with another a women officer and took me into an empty room .And the women asked me that ‘where are you going now’?

She said okay and out the room .after five minutes she came back again. This is a big crime I will not send a jail because of these family but this is your ticket and then she said go.

          I was never scared like this before in my life.  After being in jail for one hour I crossed to Niagara city with $ 150 dollar fine ticket. We reached our reserved hotel around 10:10.The next morning we went to water fall and we rode a boat and we visited the Niagara fall. We then took a bus and visited historical places. We had a lot of fun. Even if I were our plan, still I didn’t feel good. I had a lot of trip and fun around the world, but I never got a trouble like this before. That’s why I said unpleasant trip.
