Did anti plagiarized program can help to weed out plagiarism
or it only complicated the problem by making the students and the faculty
members reaching a close end with no solution. A less known program called write
check is in the hands of students to help them to check their work from plagiarism.
The instructor Tabarrok believes that the write check program is only sending a
wrong message to students by “telling them what not to do in spite of telling them
what to do” so the students will not try to depend on themselves to avoid the
plagiarism and they will not be able to find a new conclusions or a new ideas.
also Tabarrok said this software “it teach you to obey the letter of law, but
not the spirit of law” because this program will check the submitted written
paper for the properly paraphrasing ,quotation and citation and additionally it
check for the grammar ,style of write and the spelling .
The companies which are invented the turnitin or write check
is not trying to help to prevent the plagiarism problem in the world but they
are trying to get a profit from this serious issue. Thus the software detection
was not the solution to this problem,as Panagiotis
Ipeirotis agrees that in his essay which named ”why I will never pursue
cheating again” because when people are feeling fear from anything they will
not be able to progress or giving anything to that field . consequently the
academic field will turn form a place to
giving knowledge into a prison to the students and the faculty members .Thus people
will not be able to be creative .

According the article from what we have discussed before, I learn that many students in college are familiar the policy of plagiarism, but they still do it on purpose. Therefore, my issue is how to avoid plagiarism on campus. I found out that plagiarizing papers and essay is a common phenomenon around my classmates, so I wonder what is the mainly reason to encourage them to plagiarize. After I read an article “How to avoid retractions for plagiarism: Advice from a radiology journal editor(and arXiv)” from “http://www.scoop.it/t/plagiarism” I understand that there are many problems, which stimulate this issue. Also, from my own opinion, the reason of this problem is from many aspects, such as study pressure, less efficient punishment and student’s quality. From the resource mention, professors could try to use “turnitin” and other tools to help them check whether students plagiarize or not, because those tools could improve the efficiency of checking. In a result, student will careful to do it. According my experience, I insist that students are all afraid to get involved into this situation. I believe it will definitely help school to reduce plagiarism phenomenon.

With the development of the Internet, there are more and more materials put online. Student can search useful materials for their paper.  Sometimes student use the Internet materials for their paper. This problem is a general thing in China. According to SINA website survey for university student life, Most of student have ever copy Internet materials for their paper. They don't regard this behavior as plagiarize.
Why student like copy the Internet materials, I think teacher should find a way to solve this problem. Firstly, student has not told this behavior is plagiarized before they enter the university. Secondly, professor doesn't give their a best way solve their assignment. Thirdly, this is a good way for their assignment because it is hard find by professor. Actually, the plagiarism behavior not only from student and it is also reflecting on society. I think people should find a good way to solve this problem, because this behavior is not ethics.

Blog 6 Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the adoption of a person's ideas or writings or inventions of another person and disposed of as if it were on his accomplishments without reference to the source of the ideas or writings or inventions, Intentionally or unintentionally. It is known that academic production based mostly on research and ideas of others. This is acceptable provided that the author recognizes the contributions of other authors in his research, adoption of ideas or Writings or inventions of others is not wrong in itself as long as the author seed source. Possible to avoid Falling into the error of most forms of plagiarism and simply stated that once the sources used except that the concept of Plagiarism than errors related to seed sources to include a student copy of the full search form other or a section of the research or even any of the ideas or opinions contained in such research. Most students do not know how to take advantage of the writings of others to build their ideas and strengthen their articles or their research. This is what happened to Marita when accused of plagiarism in "LIVES ON THE BOUNDARY" in my opinion she was not plagiarism, but she did not know how to benefit from the writings of others, and this is a problem most of the students in the academic world, including me, before I enter in the 106 I did not know that such a work is considered plagiarism. unfortunately, this is what happens in Iraq. Most students rely in Iraq on Internet in their research is not for the benefit and enrich their research resources and research but to steal from the net.

Widely acknowledged, with the development and spread of Internet, it’s really followed by a list of problems about plagiarism. People take the advantage of Internet to finish their own essays, which reduces stresses for their work. As a research shows that “an overwhelming mahority-89 percent- say computer and the Internet have played a major role in the rise in stealing others work and claiming it as their own” (http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/college_guide/blog/plagiarism_on_the_rise.php). So large number of students has the behavior of plagiarism, which strongly illustrates Internet really have a positive effect for cheating. For example, as college students, they really have a lot of homework to be done. The pressures from courses and professors lead them to find an easy and quick way to complete their homework. Actually, Internet is a good place for them to seek help. We can find all kinds of information what we want to use, and copy some useful parts for our own papers. This is really the fastest way to complete our own work. However, we also take the risk of being accused of academic misconduct.

Why do students plagiarize? There are many reasons why this happens. One of these reasons is, when a student first comes to college, nobody guides them in what they should or should not do. They are often confused and lost with the different approaches to teaching and the level of education. They were never taught how serious plagarism is. They accidentally forget to cite references, and they waste a lot of time going out and having fun. So, when their assignment is due, they use someone else's work. In "Lives on the Boundary" by Mike Rose, Marita was in this situation and did it like this.

Another reason that students plagarize is students are concerned about getting good grades. Before I learned how serious plagarism is, intellectual property to me did not seem as important as obtaining higher grades. College students want to get certificates and degrees that help them get a job. From students' attitudes indicated in Susan D. Blums' article, I conclude that the trend in higher education is to attach strong value to credentials. So, there may be pressure to even plagarize for a good grade after knowing how bad it is.

Plagiarism has been an issue highlighted throughout the education. There have been issues highlighted about how plagiarism will cause getting a fail in the subject or get into trouble from the teacher. In my opinion, plagiarizing is a choice chosen by people and the person who is plagiarizing is the only one to be blamed for and be in charge of changing themselves to either be good or keep staying to same dishonest person. Teaching morality would not help to prevent plagiarism as the article “Plagiarism Is Not a Big Moral Deal” by Stanley Fish states that “Whenever it comes up plagiarism is a hot button topic and essays about it tend to be philosophically and morally inflated. But there are really only two points to make. (1) Plagiarism is a learned sin. (2) Plagiarism is not a philosophical issue.” It basically says that if professor explains to students that plagiarism is not right students will still plagiaries. I agree with this article that it is true and through my experiences of seeing students plagiarizing it is hard to change their thoughts. People know that cheating is not right from a young age and stealing from other people is not acceptable. Parents, teachers or older people teach their children and students that they should be honest about their works but even though children can be taught not to do something, if they believe that they are not wrong and want to cheat and steal other people’s work that is their fault and problem.

Two people have the same idea at the same time, if one of them uses this idea to publish an article first, so other use this idea to write an article is likely to be considered plagiarized, even is copyright infringement. “In the U.S., unconscious copying may still run afoul of the law, as shown in the case of George Harrison being sued after 1969′s “My Sweet Lord” sounded an awful lot like the hit 1963 single “He’s So Fine.” The court found that Harrison had indeed copied the work — but credited that he didn’t realize he’d done it. (He still had to pay up.)”[http://www.salon.com/2012/01/10/salon_debate_what_is_plagiarism/singleton/]. The idea is the intangible thing, people unable to prove this idea is belong to themselves or others. According to this, when people want to write or publish an article, they must be carefully to check their article or main idea whether similar to others. More responsible and rigorous review their articles or works.

Plagiarism is the reuse of significant, identical, or nearly identical portions of one’s own work without acknowledging that one is doing so or without citing the original work. In addition to the ethical issue, this can be illegal if copyright of the prior work has been transferred to another entity. People always focus on the point that plagiarism will do bad to the society. A lot of measure has been taken to punish the person that plagiarize others’ work. However, this is not comprehensive for that issue. Recently, a news in China has caused public concern. It is reported that a famous writer has been slanderead to copy from others’ work. It really did harm to the writer’s daily life. From the previous event, I think that it is necessary to establish related law to prevent things like that. We must first clearly judge whether plagiarism really happens and then decide punishment or something else.

Educator should use high-tech means to defeat of plagiarism. With rapid development of technology and progress of economic, Computer have become an indispensable tool in human life. Nowadays more and more students use computer grogram to finish their homework. Then that can not avoid some plagiarism appeared owing to students scan informations from Internet unrestricted. So educator should use software to combat academic cheating. The article "Software Catches(and Also Helps) Young Plagiarists" by Marc Parry describes a phenomenon that software is a double-edged sword, which is combat between educators and students. Meanwhile educator found it was a long-run struggle for plagiarism. But blindly punishment is not a solution and will deepen the students' rebel psychology. As a student, I enjoy scan informations from the Internet, which can amplify my horizon and increase knowledge. When I accept higher education before, I do not understand what is plagiarism, what is citation and different between them. I believe it's a widely problem in college. As a educator, they should teach students more knowledge about citation. Because many students don't know the rule of plagiarism.

Teachers should find a new way to fight with plagiarism. Teachers have struggled with it for several decades, however, they still cannot wipe out plagiarism in higher education. So, it’s time finding a new way to resolve it. In the past, teachers used stern face and a serious punishment making students afraid, and then wanted students stop cheating. The students were not intimidated by the teachers, and, therefore, they rebelled against the teacher’s commands. Nonetheless, students and teachers should not be opposite. Scott Jaschik, in It’s Culture, Not Morality, reviews Susan D. Blum’s book which addresses what kind of sentiments teacher should face to their student. In this article, he cite Blum’s result of her interview that many of students came to higher education for a diploma instead of having genius in major, and lack interested in their major leaded to less cognition for it, copying from others would be the quickest way to finish a paper. In the Lives on the Boundary by Mike Rose, Morita was accused of plagiarism by her ignorant about citation. In these cases, communicating more with students is a better approach than being strict with them. Teacher is a respected profession who turned students from ignorant to knowledgeable. And the relationship between teachers and students should be friend, instead of cats and mice. If teacher states more clearly the importance of citation, lots of students may not break the rules of plagiarism; if teacher and students have a good relationship, students may not plagiarized to made teachers disappointment.

Blog 6 Issue Paragraph

Punishment is able to prevent future unconscious plagiarism and protect the intellectual property. As a student, we all have hard time work for our final paper. Thinking about how we feel if we are noticed that our work is used without any credit. It's no doubt that we feel offended. Based on the definition of punishment, which is defined as "a penalty or sanction given for any crime or offence" (Collins English Dictionary – Complete and Unabridged© HarperCollins Publishers 1991, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2003), plagiarism as a misbehavior should be punishment. Nowadays, plagiarism become worldwide problem in college. Several researches show that "40 percent admitted to plagiarizing a few sentences in written assignments." faced with high percentage of plagiarism, educators consider it no longer an unmeant mistake. On the contrary, plagiarism become purposeful misconduct to finish assignment and get good grades, which is infringe upon the integrity of academic writing in most cases. To stop correct this misconduct, punishment is able to alarm student and make them realize the importance of originality. However, we can't deny the unconscious plagiarism may occurred, which is caused by the misunderstanding in different culture background, such as the example of Marita and Aurora. (alan brown)In other aspects, punishment notice some unconscious plagiarizer what they do wrong and prevent future mistake.

It cannot be totally denied the positive impact of the internet to the education. Yes, plagiarism seems to be more accessible to students when the internet is commonly used and a lot of data can be easily approached. Provided that the convenience from the internet has been offered, it is now viewed as another form of plagiarism. However, the internet is not as people think as an absolutely harmful invention. It can not be denied that the websites offer students numerous materials of a wide range academic area. If you look at the history, you will find a great revolution of education following the internet technology. “The Project surveyed 754 online youth ages 12-17 and their parents. Teens and parents report that Internet is vital to completing school projects and has effectively replaced the library for a large number of online youth.” (http://www.pewinternet.org/Reports/2001/The-Internet-and-Education.aspx) From this, it is easily found that the way of study changes and focuses on looking up information via the internet instead of library. Additionally, the internet may be a powerful tool against plagiarism. “Since these resources were almost always professionally written, the risk of detection was very high.”(http://www.plagiarism.org/plag_article_plagiarism_and_the_internet.html) This shows that the internet could also be an effective detector of plagiarism depending on how to use it.

Blog 6 Issue Paragraph

In this blog, you will write one of the paragraphs concerning the issues of plagiarism. This may be one of the paragraphs used in your argument essay. First, you need to decide and narrow your issue to an arguable statement of claim (like we have practiced in class). Next, explain the issue in your own words (2-3 sentences) Then, cite material from the articles and your own experience to support the claims. Explain how this source idea fits your claim. Give another example or citation. This paragraph will combine elements of both summary sentences and your own opinions. Please write a paragraph of 7-8 sentences, at least 150-200 words.

Question 4
From the question 4, we know that sometime we have a discussion before we writting a paper, the issue of that whether the idea you can cite by someone points out has been aroused. From the answer we know that some people hold the opinion that you can use it before you asked your teacher, because of that is the main reason that your group exchange everyones thinking. On the other side, it's not 100 percent plagiarism because of the goal by group is to share the ideas. As a result, you have to be careful when you citing a idea.
From my perspective, the reason why I chose this topic lies in the fact that this kind of situation happens a lot in the life. As a undergraduate student it's very important that have to check out whether it is a plagiarism behaviour when you citing it.
Quesrtion8
As the development of society, an increasing number of people give concern to the topic about plagiarism. People with different background and various experience may have different opinions. Some people hold the idea that when we find an interesting article on the internet and cut and paste it in our posting, it is not illegal for them to do that. They think that it is the internet was originally designed for sending ideas and articles quickly to interested people. However, other people may hold a totally different idea, they think that cutting and pasting is not rational to cut and paste unless quotat marks and give the reference.
As far as I am concerned, for students in the campus, it is not a positive action. The aim of education is to improve the ability of students including ability of making something new, ability of thinking critical. However plagiarism is another way of imitation, with which students will always follow the things others have done. Without new ideas coming out, the speed social development will definitely be reduced.  Another factor for preventing plagiarism is that persons finishing original books, music, papers have spend a lot of time of effort on their work, so it is unfair to them when others reuse their effort without paying anything.

First of all I chose the fourth question, Because it is how to take the idea during a discussion of your friend in the group. The question idea is interested me because we use it every day during the lesson I was thinking before choosing answers Is this plagiairsm or not,but when I chose the answer. The answer is not clearly fraud because we can use the ideas of friends when the discussion because it is not written on paper, but some people they consider it plagiairsm we should be cautious of citing our friends idea's in order to not fall into the problems of plagiairsm. The second question No. 8 for "cutting and pasting". Question is dangerous because it is very high of plagiairsm if the person did not use quotation mark, but if use the quoting and refrence that is not proplem. I advise all my friends to stay away from the idea of copy and paste from the net, even they used the quote. Because it is useful to learn how to write, we must learn how to write our thoughts and formulation in order to develop our capabilities. Not a mistake to learn from others how to write and how to express our ideas, but the error is to take the writings of others and make it to us

At the beginning of it I like to greet Dr. on this program and the context in wonderful. Questions is very impressive. I learned as a student of the questions and how to deal with subjects writing and extreme caution so as not to reality in the trap of plagiarism. When I was a student at the university in Iraq, I used parts of the writings of the net in my post I did not know that's thing wrong,But from now I will not do things like this because it does not help me to learn and to express my thoughts

In the OSU online plagiarism tutorial, there are two interesting questions about plagiarism. The first one is question four, which is talking about whether you will be committed plagiarism if you use someone’s idea from a discussing group without citing. Another is question eight, which is discussing whether you will be regarded as plagiarism if you cut and paste an interesting article from internet to your posting. For question four, I think the correct answer is yes because other people’s ideas belong to their intellectual property, so if you want to use their idea, you need to cite it. Also, in question eight, I believe this situation should be considered as plagiarism, because you don’t have right to directly use other people’s article without citing.

After I chose answer, I found out that we could use other people’s idea without citing in a group because we could share the idea in a group. Furthermore, some people do not regard ideas as intellectual property because it does not write down, but some people think it is really serious of using other people’s idea. As a result, we should be careful to use it. Moreover, cutting and pasting is a way of internet to attract reader’s attention, so it is hard to say whether it is wrong or right of falling into plagiarism. As far as I am concerned I think this question is quite interesting because in college discussing and sharing idea in college is a common phenomenon. We will easily fall into this problem if we do not pay attention on it. Therefore, it reminds us to be careful to use other people’s idea. I suggest that college students should keep what is plagiarism in their mind, and be careful to get involved into it.

In question 5 ,the question is arguing for the student ability to interpret a sources of information while he writing a scientific paper and the problem is that student having the authority to mention something in his scientific paper whether he don’t remember where he found it .The most significant answer was C which is said “give up on the idea and go on to something else” is the most safer to me and it will protect me from being in critical situation with my instructor . The feedback of the answer said that the best way to do that, is by trying to search and finding articles on the same subject .So maybe during your search you will find someone cite the article which you don’t remember it and finding the original article is the only way that can help the student to mention his data.
In question 8 the student was trying to post some information to his class online and while he doing that he found attractive article on the internet so he cut and pastes it while he was posting. This case is consider to me plagiarism because he only cut it and paste it and he didn’t try to paraphrase it or cite his work and the feedback answer said that teacher will not accept cutting and pasting without citation so to be in safer the student should give the references of his article.
In this tutorial, I learned a lot of thing and the question which I like it is number 4 because in this question I learned that sharing idea and taking some ideas from the people surround you is not plagiarism unless this idea is not written. As Aurora mentioned in her letter to Ed Dante in the “intellectual property divide” that when two people having the same idea or the same conclusion but the academic world will accept the idea of the person who will wrote it first .so the plagiarism sometimes considered so complex idioms because in some cases the judgment will not be fair or not clear.
My question is who first mention the plagiarism as an important issue and when that happened.

Question 5 discusses when people want to write a scientific paper, but can’t find an interpretation of some data. What should the people do? I think the good method is that try to find other paper has discussed the same issue and then use the citation on paper to find the original article. This method can help people to find and cite an accurately interpretation of date. An accurately interpretation is very important for scientific paper. At the same time can improve the quality of paper.
From this tutorial I learned that when I need to cite some information about my issue, I must find the information from the original article. Thus I can make sure this information is accurately and where it comes from.

Question 8 discusses that if student need to post something online, the student cut and paste article from internet. Is this considered plagiarism? I think if the student didn’t clearly shows that the article is cite from internet, this action may be accused of plagiarism. Show the reference is the protection of others’ intangible things. From this tutorial I learned that if I want to cite something from internet, I need to show where I cite. Otherwise I may be considered plagiarism. In the United States, when people download something need to pay the money with these things. People should be to understand and observe the law of intellectual property and to protect own and others’ intangible things.

Question 1 discusses a situation that the assignment of 107G is the same with 106G but it much longer that 106G. Whether you will add some sentences in your old paper, will you plagiarizing yourself or not? The answer I choice is ask your 107G teacher whether you can rewrite the paper. Obviously, this way is the safe choice because you can permission from you teacher.
From my opinion, I think rewriting is not plagiarism because the old paper belongs to us, which we only need to be amended the original foundation. For example we can give more examples and informations or use some complex sentence. Of course, the premise of rewrite is teachers need to agree it. Otherwise we need choose another topic and write a different paper.
Question 8 describes a problem that if students copy the content from the Internet, is it a kind of plagiarize behavior? This is a very common phenomenon in collage and the majority of students will do it, which they can get useful information on the Internet easily.
From the question, I learn about citing information on the Internet is also considered to be a copy. Because the information belongs to somebody on the Internet, which is a intellectual property rights. We can learn and read the information on the Internet but we can not to depend on it and download it. A good article needs to his own soul in it, so students should do it independent.

   4. In a peer discussion group, you were asked to discuss your paper before you started writing. One of the members of your group gave you an interesting idea. Do you need to cite the idea in your paper as you would cite a quotation from a paper?

According to the definition of citation, this question is not need cite or quote when we write our paper .Because the member is participated our group. If the member is our group, he/she shares our ideas too.  We pick up and drop off different ideas between us. From this point there will be a lot of argue between the participants. After the debates, one interesting idea will raise from those of others. Then we will take it and write it. Is it some one's primary source? I don't think so .It is the whole group ideas. So in my understanding, we do not need cite the members idea.

8. You were assigned to post something to a class list online you find an interesting article on the Internet and cut and past it in your posting. Is this considered plagiarism?

Absolutely it is plagiarism. This is some one's particular job or task. Someone exerts or spend time, money and efforts for this issue. If it is some one's effort, we are going to say "intellectual property" Intellectual property is not coping with out cite or asking permission from someone which concern or the owner. So you are taking the post with out quote, and post as yours. This means cheating or stealing, that why i said it plagiarism.

Plagiarism tutorial by Shengyu

Question 4 discusses a situation that occurred in class. We were supposed to discuss essay topics and share advice before writing the paper. Some of the members gave some good ideas, and I decided to use them in my paper. Should I cite the ideas or not?
In our class, I had learned that if you used others’ idea, you needed to cite a quotation for it. However, in my opinion, I do not think this idea needs to be cited, because the purpose of the conversation was to help me to find an idea for my paper. If students are confused about an assignment, they also can meet their professor who can give them some advice. In condition like this, the professor would not argue with the students not citing the professor’s own idea of their. In the same reason, I do not think I should cite the idea in my paper. And after reading the answer on the Internet, I think my point more reasonable. I can tell the teacher that the idea was held by our group instead of by me.
Question 10 has posted an example of plagiarism and asks if you agree or not? In the two passages, both of them are talking about Hemingway’s idea “the values in life that will best serve man”. Furthermore, the second paragraph has paraphrased the first paragraph very well.
In my opinion, I don’t think the second paragraph is plagiarism. Although it used the idea in first paragraph, it not copies it word-for-word. The author of second paragraph has reading the first paragraph, understanding it and adding his own opinion in it. So it is only a paraphrasing of first one not plagiarizing.
All of questions in the tutorial are controversial. However, after reading the answer of these problems, it provides a better solution for me. As the problem 5, if I met it in the past, I will not try to cite it. After reading the answer, I have known that citing interpretations is very significant in science, and I will follow it in the future. Plagiarism is very important in school, and people will take it more seriously in the future. And it also concern about our credit in the daily life, so I will pay more attention with it from now.
