A
memorable experience at BSE
In the winter of 2010, I
attended the YBSE class in Beijing. The biggest harvest for this trip was that I
learned the importance of teamwork.
BSE’s full name is “The
Excellerated Business School for Entrepreneurs”, founded in 1978. YBSE is the
class for youngsters. This class teaches people business in practice instead of
academic research. In eight days, every team has to create a plan and finish a business proposal. I was the leader
of our team.
My
team created a plan of a company that services people who want travel outside
with their dogs. Nowadays, more and more people begin to keep pets, especially
dogs. Because of the rules of prohibited pets, traveling with their dogs is not
easy. So in our business proposal, we planned to make a travel agency. We would
formulate a travel plan for the people and dogs, consulting with airline for a private
plane and a special hour in park for them. We would also arrange some lecture
that teaching how to take care their dogs better. The origin that we made this
proposal is the number of people keeping dogs gradually increase, and some of
them love their dogs as a family members. And these people do not begrudge for
their dogs. They would be worth spending money for a fond memory.
None
of members in our team is major in business. It meant that making the project
was more difficult for us. And as a leader, I should take more responsibility. I
had to calm them down when they argued too sharply. I had to distribute tasks
to everyone as equitable and reasonable. I had to stand out when we need answer
some questions on class, even though we did not have an accurate answer. And I
had to take care of their feelings, although they were all older than me.
As
a young leader without any experience before, I had taken too much on my
shoulder, and finally exploded with Zonghan before the last day. When we
checked the planned accounts last time, I suddenly found that he got wrong initial
numbers, which was one of the most significant part for our plan. It showed
that how much money we need to start our plan and how can we get profit. So we
have redone all of two days’ work in one night. After realized severity of it, I
yelled with him and complained in a jet without control. We had a big fight and
he left away. After dinner, he found me and apologized first. I was so regretful
that I did something wrong but not apologized first. And I was grateful for his
tolerance, if not, I might lose a friend by my stupid mistake. We worked all
night to fix it, and slept only two hours. It was the first time to work so
hard for me. Finally, we won a piece of prize by our effort.
And
I gained much more than that. First, I met a lot of friends and we are very
close until now. Secondly, I have known that a man could never complete five
guys work. I worked alone in the past, even it was teamwork. I have considered
overconfident as I could make the best work by myself and always felt very
tired after finished it. After this trip, I knew I was totally in a wrong way. And
the biggest harvest was that I got a big test for my leadership. Although I didn’t
do perfectly, I would do better next time.
