Summary--“Plagiarism? Are you kidding?” by Chaoyi Du

The video “Plagiarism? Are you kidding?” by Joel Bloch, shows the purpose and function of citation. The boy feels that citation is just to show he has read the whole text. He considers citing sources as a waste of time. The boy also mentions that it is hard to paraphrase every sentence using distinguishing words and grammar in order to prevent from plagiarism. For response, the girl describes the importance of citation when writing a paper. She explains that writer may introduce the idea and strengthen the viewpoints by citing sources. Citation is considered to be a writing rule which can help writer to arrange the content logically. The girl suggests the boy that sometimes he can summarize the main thoughts of the article instead of paraphrasing the content.  She thinks that good citation can show wisdom and mentality.  All in all, a conflict exists in the video that the boy claims that citing is something useless while the girl consider citation as one of the important elements in a paper.
I shared the same question with the bay before I watched the video. I once thought that why I need to write something those others had already done. In my Chinese writing, it seems that I seldom to use citation in my article because teachers want to read our creative ideas. When I need to cite sources, I usually quote the whole sentence without any changes which shows the respect of the author and make the sentences more powerful. However, I know the reason why citation is imperative in my writing after the explanation of the girl. It is crucial to find the evidence to support my opinion and citation is a good way to win the readers’ agreement. In addition, citing sources must be carefully use or it will consider to be plagiarism.
